"free-flowing, globe-spanning" - New Yorker
"...intricate, cinematic, constantly shifting series of themes anchored in thousands of years of Indian classical music." - New York Music Daily
Led by violinists Trina Basu and Arun Ramamurthy, NAKSHATRA reimagines the potential of string Chamber Music for our global times. The New York City based group explores beauty found at the intersections of their musical paths, where original compositions weave together threads of South Indian classical, Western chamber music, jazz and creative improvisation. Varying colors, shapes and sounds emerge from the ensemble with their esteemed collaborators, who include Marika Hughes (cello), Rashaan Carter (bass), Rajna Swaminathan (mrudangam), Jake Charkey (cello), Rich Stein (percussion) and Sameer Gupta (tabla). They have performed at venues such as Ragas Live Festival, The Jazz Gallery, Noguchi Museum Bang on a Can, Benque Cultural Center (Belize), Sri Ramanjaneya Sangeetha Sabha (India) and Lyric Chamber Society of NY.
Nakshatra is available for public and private concerts, and workshops for students and professionals of all ages who love music, play an instrument or are curious about creative approaches to string playing and chamber music.
